Route: Auckland-Brisbane, Feb 2004
Ticket price: A$400
Flight duration: 3 hours
Aircraft type & class: Boeing 777-300 Economy
Meal type: Lunch
Thai style Chicken Curry with a hint of coconut and lemongrass flavour,
garnished with red chillies, accompanied with Chinese mixed vegetables
(including miniture sweetcorn and shittake mushrooms) and steamed rice.
Salad with lettuce and rocket, two slices of cucumber and one segment
of tomato. Salad dressing. Cajun spiced lamb loin appetizer placed on
lettuce, accompanied with pan fried green courgettes, dried tomatos and
served with beetroot relish. Glazed Raspberry Charlotte garnished with
dark chocolate scroll and fresh mint. A small "log" roll with
butter. Cheddar Cheese and two Arnott Biscuits. A small Emirates chocolate.
Drink: Pot of water.
Comments: Wow, so much food, for such a short three
hour flight. The chicken is done just right, with lots of flavour, but
has tiny (and very hot) chillies hidden in the rice which will take the
top of your head off. An odd choice for an airlinemeal. Lovely mushrooms
though.
The Lamb appetizer is a good start, with beetroot relish in the Australian
style. Lovely sauce for the salad too. But best of all is the desert,
which is one of the best served in any airline's economy cabin. Kind of
like a cheesecake, it melts in the mouth. Shame about the roll, which
is a real disapointment, and after all that the cheese seemed pretty ordinary.

Route: Brisbane-Auckland, Feb 2004
Ticket price: A$400
Flight duration: 3 hours
Aircraft type & class: Boeing 777-300
Meal type: Breakfast
Poached Eggs topped with Hollandaise sauce, on top of tomatos in a bed
of baked beans, served with two sauteed button mushrooms in tomato sauce.
Fruitbowl with 3 slices of two different types of mellon, three grapes
and a strawberry. Danish pastry, crossant, roll (with seeds) butter and
apricot jam. Yoghurt bar, cheese and biscuits.
Drink: Orange juice
Comments: Another incredible meal - at least Emirates
are consistant. The poached eggs are a bit solid after having been frozen
and heated up, but the sauce still has flavour, and the two mushrooms
go down very well.
The fruit bowl is very good, with a fresh strawberry even in winter. The
crossant is soft and light, while the danish would be enough for breakfast
on its own. The roll is a bit dry, and the cheese and biscuits are still
confusing. The yoghurt bar is a bit cheap and industrial, but still works.

Route: Brisbane-Auckland, Jan 2004
Ticket price: A$400
Flight duration: 3 hours
Aircraft type & class: Boeing 777-300
Meal type: Breakfast
Plain egg omelette topped with grated Gruyere cheese accompanied with
creamed spinach, grilled veal sausage and roesti potatoes. Fruitbowl with
2 slices of three different types of mellon, two grapes and a strawberry.
Danish pastry, crossant, roll (with seeds) butter and strawberry jam.
Yoghurt bar, cheese and biscuits.
Drink: Orange juice
Comments: All this for a three hour flight - in economy!...
I mean, you hardly have time to eat it all! And very good it is too. The
Omelette is as expected very plain, but comes with a fantastic veal sausage
and lovely tender spinach.
The fruit bowl is a delight, and the strawberry an unexpected treat. The
crossant is soft and light, while the danish speaks for itself in terms
of its stickyness. By this point I was a bit lost as to what to do with
the roll, let alone the cheese and biscuits. The yoghurt bar is definately
something to save for later. All in all one of the best breakfasts ever
served in economy.

Route: EK019 DXB to MAN, 27 Jan 2004
Flight time: 7h 30m
Aircraft, class: A330-200, economy
Business or leisure: leisure
Contents:
- smoked hammour with a marinated mixed pepper salad
- Seasonal salad
- Pan fried chicken breast with zaatar and garlic pineseed sauce, accompanied
with sumak ric and vegetables
or
- Beef Ragout with pearl onions served with match stick vegetables and
mashed potatoes with herbs
- Dark chocolate and raspberry cake served with sauce anglais
- bread and butter
- cheese and biscuits
- tea or coffee with chocolates
Drinks: open bar. I had a Campari orange as an aperitif.
Comments: Very impressive indeed for an airline meal,
especially for economy class. Everything on the tray was good. The ingredients
were very fresh, even the hammour fish. The chicken was tender and flavourful.
The dessert was as good as any nice cake shop would serve. Even the tea
was good and strong. The coffee was a bit bland. Anyway, that beautiful
piece of small chocolate ended my meal on a good note!

Main Course:
Chicken Manchurian
Chinese style grilled chicken with Manchurian sauce, served with yellow
squash, sugar snap peas and egg noodles
Dessert:
Custard Fruit
Fruit:
Melon, watermelon, grape, half a strawberry, pineapple and a slice of
kiwi
Drink: Water
Comments: The chicken contained a lot of fat but was
nice and meaty. The sauce with it was more along the lines of something
I would get at a Chinese fast food place in the United States. Fine and
dandy but I do
not expect Emirates business class to be serving something along the lines
of fast food. The noodles were decent but as some parts had been dried
too much in the oven, it became a bit too crunchy. How come so many airlines
now seem to keep their rice and noodles moist yet Emirates missed it this
time round? The fruits, which were moist and fresh, and the fruit custard
was the saving grace of this meal! It was exceptional, really well prepared
and tasted excellent, just wish there had been more of it; as it was finished
within four teaspoons.

Drink: Water (Coffee and Tea was offered a short while

as did the Danish. As far as the main dish goes, it was as every bit pleasing.
The lamb was tender and the pancakes were excellent, only the eggs were
a bit tasteless but that was solved with some pepper. The potatoes were
nice and creamy.

Contents of the meal: Unexplainable / Inedible Salad?, Chicken Curry,
white rice, spinach, dhai boondi, Bread, butter, pickle, milk based desert
& Chocolate.
Drink: Bacardi & Coke.
Comments: The Salad? Don’t want to remember it.
Chicken curry and rice were good. Spinach was bland and tasteless. Dhai
boondi, bread & chocolate were nice. Desert was ok. The meal served
could have been better on this day as it was the Day of Eid. And Ek being
a middle eastern airline wasn’t offering anything special on their
flights for this day. Not even an “Eid mubarak”. Not that
I am a muslim, but felt that the Airline should have had some festive
spirit on board. Although the Service was good and the flight attendants
were helpfull and also asking fellow passangers to make their seats upright
for other passangers to have their meal with comfort.

Flight Duration: 1:40 hours
Meal Type: Flight departure was 10 at night so may be
dinner or a snack
Comments on meal: One of the worst meals I have ever
eaten onboard. Actually eaten is a wrong word to express as I left it
as it is after just one try on really hard beef in the main dish. It was
spinach and beef/mutton with rice and steamed vegetables. But nothing
was eatable. Fresh fruits were good and dessert which was rice pudding
(kheer/firni) was too sweat. it comes with bread and butter. Coffee and
drinks were available.
Rating: 2 and they are for fresh fruit salad

Route: Dubai to Johannesburg, 8 Dec 2003
Flight Duration: 8 hours
Meal Type: Snack and breakfast
Even though the flight was mostly overnight the food could have been quite
little if I have not already eaten at Dubai airport. Gone are the days
when Emirates used to have one of the best meals served in the economy
class. Both the quantity and quality are compromised now.
(043) - Snack was chicken sandwich with chocolate cookies. And then there
was a long wait for next meal which was served just before arrival. (044)
- Breakfast was a much better deal. It comes with fresh fruit salad, bread
roll, cracker, cheese and butter and fruit preserve. There was a small
muffin to go with it too. Main dish had grilled beef, chicken patty, beef
sausage, potato patties and steamed vegetables. Though the beef was a
bit hard and vegetables soggy but relatively speaking that was a good
and fulfilling breakfast. Coffee or tea and softdrinks were available.
