Route: Auckland - San Francisco, 25 Feb 2006
Ticket price: n/a
Flight duration: 12h 00m
Class: economy
Aircraft: Boeing 777-200
Meal: vegan - pumpkin ravioli, zucchini, lentils. A roll. A package of dried fruit. A mysterious kiwi jello-like dessert.
Drink: orange juice
Comments: I requested a vegetarian meal, but I found out from the flight attendant (midway through the flight, when they served the first meals) that my veggie meal went on the AKL > LAX flight instead. So, I had this vegan meal. It was still quite palatable, except for the nasty jello dessert.

Flight duration: 12h 25m
Class: economy

Meal: Vegetarian - First meal (Early Dinner): Veggie pattie with mashed potatoes and grilled zucchini. Cup of red grapes, a roll, and Carr's water crackers with margarine.

Second meal (late night snack): Spinach wrapped in Eggplant, basmati rice with peas, apple sauce.
Drink: orange juice, tea
Comments: These were one of the best tasting vegetarian meals I've had on a long haul flight. The only complaint I have is for the first meal -- I envied everyone else who got cheesecake for dessert.
Rating 1-10 (worst-best): 9.5

Drink: Beer and Matarangi Syrah
Comments: We thought the service was poor (-1). The female flight attendant was a tad grumpy and we sensed some hostility. The other male flight attendant threw the tablecloth at us. We looked at each other surprised. My companion did not like the entree and misses her ice cream. Plastic knife (-1). But look at the steak!!! Still pink in the middle. (+2) Excellent! I haven't seen an inflight steak that well prepared for a while. But plastic knife and unfriendliness eluded that perfect score of 10.

Route: Auckland - Singapore, 27 Jan 2006
Ticket price: n/a
Flight duration: 10h 05m
Class: economy
Aircraft: 767-300ER
Meal: Dinner - Slow roast lamb served with peas and grilled sweet potato. Dessert was kiwi cheesecake. Warm roll and cheese & crackers
Drink: Ginger ale and Jasmine Tea
Comments: The roast lamb was perfect. Not as fatty as I thought it would be. However, I don't the sweet potato was grilled. Nevertheless, it was sweet and smooth. A good meal the end the flight with. The kiwi cheesecake was a bit disapointing. It was just normal maked cheesecake served with kiwi sauce on top. I thought I would be cream cheesecake with kiwi in it.

Meal: Lunch - breaded chicken breat served on mash potato accompanied with french peas in tomato paste. Carrot cake, warm roll and cheese & crackers. After lunch, the was a round of ice cream service
Drink: Sprite and Jasmine tea
Comments: The chicken breast and the mash was done quite well. However I don't think french peas go well with tomato paste. The cabin crew were very much more friendlier during this flight than the one I few to Auckand. The ice cream was noramal, not any premium type.

Meal: Breakfast - Waffles with ham, raisin roll (very good, difficult to get on other flights), strawberry yogurt
Drink: OJ and Sprite
Comments: Breakfast was served about 2 hours before arrival. A nice warm breakfast after a long flight. Waffles were done quite well, not as soggy as expected and the ham was not as oily as thought. Had a can of sprite to give a glucose boost.

Meal: Dinner - Indian Vegetarian Curry, Cheesecake is raspberry sauce, warm roll and cheese & crackers
Drink: Coke (not pictured) + Chinese Oolong tea
Comments: I was left with no choice because the beef option were taken before it reached my row (which was the second last), but the motherly stewardess promised us that the breakfast would start from us.The curry rice tasted quite nice without the heavy indian spices. The curry was smmoth but I feel that the vegetables were a bit overcooked. Overall not a too bad meal. Oh... they also serve kiwi wine onboard

Meal: Dinner - Steak with noodles, carrots and snowpeas. Lemon mousse with strawberry sauce, bread roll, cheese and crackers
Drink: A rather good Marlbourgh Pinot Noir
Comments: The best meal of I have ever had in economy class. The steak was superb, tender and cooked just the way I like it. The vegetables were just right, the dessert was declicious and the wine was very tasty. Once Air New Zealand get Private TVs on all their long-haul flights, they will have a very hard to beat economy service!

Meal type: Dinner (vegan), Economy
Contents of the meal: Vegetarian patty and tomato sauce with rice and steamed vegetables, cucumber salad with lemon vinaigrette dressing, wholemeal bun and margarine which contained dairy, grapes.
Comments: The patty was bland and tasteless as was the sauce. The vegetables were over-steamed. The margarine contained dairy even though this was meant to be a vegan meal. The cucumber salad was not the freshest. The grapes were ok but pretty under-ripe. The bun was as hard as a rock. Definitely not the best Air NZ meal I've ever had.
