Route: Beijing to Singapore, 26 Aug 2004
Ticket price: S$ 480
Flight Duration: 6 hours
Aircraft type & class: 767-200; Economy class
Business or leisure trip: Leisure trip
Meal: Dinner service
Starter: Tuna with chinese pickled vegetables
Main meal: Chicken stewed in black sauce, white rice, steamed vegetables; White bread roll
Dessert: Vanilla pudding with chocolate flakes
Drink: Orange Juice, followed by Chinese (eek...not a really tasty combination!). These were served during the pre-meal drink service.
Comments This was the return journey of my trip to Beijing. The crew were very much friendlier and it was a very pleasant flight. The chicken was very tasty (for an asian palette) and was not over-cooked. The starter was however, an unsual combination of canned tuna fish and salty chinese pickled vegetables. But on the whole, the meal was certainly much more edible than certain European carriers I've travelled with.
Rating 1-10 (worst-best): 8/10 for the meal, 9/10 for the cabin service.

Business or leisure trip: Leisure trip
Meal: Late night snack. The flight took off at 10 minutes after midnight so most of the passengers were already asleep. Those still awake were presented with a typical chinese light meal.
Plain rice congee (completely tastless); Pickled Chinese vegetables; Finger sandwiches (tomato and lettuce/tuna and lettuce); Fresh cut fruits; Flavoured Yoghart
Drink: A drink service perceded the meal service. I got an orange juice from a pack. It was nice and unsweetened. After the meal service, I was served chinese tea.
Comments The service was mechanical, without any smiles or little extras. Even so, they were extremely quick and efficient with the meal service.

Drink: Room temperature H2O
Comments YIKES! After having wonderful meals in Hong Kong, having a communist type first class meal was a shock to the system. The salad was a waldorf with the mystery meat heaped on it. You had to dig under it to get to the still frozen waldorf. My traveling companions one row ahead of us ordered the last of the chicken so we were stuck eating the cod. EEEWWW! Very fishy as I guess cod should be, served piping hot with some plain white rice. Ate the rice, left the fish. Skipped dessert but seatmate had the cheesecake that was very dry.
There were 3 F/As assigned to only 6 first class pax (we made up 4 of the 6) and service was very attentive.

Comments 'This was the Chinese breakfast selection. There rice congee was sticky and tasteless, as expected, but usually several offerings of pickles and sliced meats should also be offered -- had to dump the marinated vegetables into the porridge to give it some taste. A roll filled with cold cuts was offered later, but the turkey cold cuts were off-putting; did not finish. Meals for row mates appeared more appetizing."
