What would be the 1st thing to consider when building a new airport?
For example - there has to be enough space at the end of the runways.
Personally, I think the direction of the runway is essential?
In Sharm, Egypt I noticed there's always a quite strong wind from the northeast. Which - to me - explains the position of the runway.
Is that true, or just coincidence?

Location location location. That's the first thing to consider. Then the size of the airport.

The winds are one reason, however a strong wind FROM NE would be a reason NOT to land from there, you always try to have HEAD wind. If you look at the picture, you see mountains in the west, not a good thing to lead a runway into. Then, you have to think of the people living arround the airport, in SSH you usually land from the NE where you "only" disturb fishes. The hotels are mainly in the south of the airport, tourists don't want a plane over their hads :-)

Actually the hotel I stayed at is north of the airport, and it's pretty noisy indeed
But it was (nearly) the only one, or am I wrong? The cities of Sharm-el-Sheikh, Naama Bay and Raz-Umm-Sid are all in the south...

That is correct - let's say one of four, something like that.
But I saw about 10 new hotels and resorts are being built at the same time, north of the airport. I wonder how popular they are going to be...

Runway direction may very well be the primary consideration. Indeed, other than the amount of land necessary, prevailing wind direction is essential. Often, a site is selected and wind studies are performed for more than a year to best decide the direction of the runway.
