Out of the several long-haul JAL flights I have taken recently,
the best meal (it deserves 9 points)on the airline was on the flight from
Sydney to Tokyo. The Sydney Caterers for JAL are fabulous, I wonder which
company JAL uses in Sydney? (Does anyone know?). I am afraid the LEAST
GOOD meals (only 5.5 points in my view) were on JAL flights that started
from Tokyo Narita, the home base of the airline! The JAL Sakura business
class lounge in Tokyo Narita Airport was also extremely poor, tired and
sad-looking. In addition, tthere was hardly any real food and the drinks
selection was very limited, unlike some of the other Asian airlines which
are very good in their offer of good food and drinks selection in their
luxurious lounges. JAL Cabin Crew are friendly, professional and welcoming. |

There was only one older stewardess serving my row so by the
time the meal had reached me, everyone else on the opposite rows had finished
their meal and I was famished. The task of giving meals proved more tedious
for one sole trollie dollie to handle herself and after the stewardesses
on the opposite rows and finished their task, they came along to help
this poor old maid. However, the meal was still warm and delicious and
I enjoyed it alot, minus the bread which the absent-minded stewardess
forgot to give. Service was quite good, with the FAs constantly walking
up and down the aisle making sure everyone's flight was comfortable.
Later, delicious green tea icecream was also served. What can I say, Oishi! |

Was quite disappointed they only had one meal for this rather
long flight, but overall was quite satisfied that we still had a choice
of Beef Bowl or Fried Perch with Sweet & Sour Sauce/Egg Noodle despite
sitting all the way at the back of cattle class.
But my choice of Beef Bowl definately didn't taste any better than it
looks. Rather fatty pieces of beef.
A JAL packet of nuts was served with a drink right before meal time. After
the meal, the FAs disappeared. |

Nice Amuse Bouche/Amuse Guelle. The Millefeuille described in
the menu were missing fom the starter (!) but still, the dish was good.
As with most airline steaks, it was not really possible if one required
the steak to be "rare" as the airline galley did not really
cook the meat on board, but it was still delicious with the Wild Mushroom
Sauce. Steamed rice was available on request for all meals, including
Western meals. The dessert was good though not exceedingly so. Petit fours
of Japanese choclates were surprisingly excellent, comparable to the best
of Belgian chocolates. The cabin crew service was very, very good indeed
and the cabin attendents really know how to make passengers feel welcome
and they seem to take the notion of "service with a smilie"
to heart. |
