Route: Sydney to Tokyo, 2006-03-11
Date added: 2008-05-21
Flight duration: 8h 00m
Flight class: business
Ticket price: n/a
Aircraft: Boeing 747
Meal: Lunch - Smoked Salmon,Butterfly Prawn,Scallop & Prosciutto Ham for starters; Potato & Leak Soup; Choice of Fillet Beef with Mustard Sauce ; Grilled Vegetable Salad; Bread or Steamed Rice; Desserts.
Drink: Selection of Wines - but I chose Mineral Water, not very adventurous!
Comments: Out of the several long-haul JAL flights I have taken recently, the best meal (it deserves 9 points)on the airline was on the flight from Sydney to Tokyo. The Sydney Caterers for JAL are fabulous, I wonder which company JAL uses in Sydney? (Does anyone know?). I am afraid the LEAST GOOD meals (only 5.5 points in my view) were on JAL flights that started from Tokyo Narita, the home base of the airline! The JAL Sakura business class lounge in Tokyo Narita Airport was also extremely poor, tired and sad-looking. In addition, tthere was hardly any real food and the drinks selection was very limited, unlike some of the other Asian airlines which are very good in their offer of good food and drinks selection in their luxurious lounges. JAL Cabin Crew are friendly, professional and welcoming.

Route: Tokyo NRT to SIN, 2006-03-19
Date added: 2008-05-21
Flight duration: 7h 00m
Flight class: economy
Ticket price: n/a
Aircraft: B767-346/ER JA602J
Meal: Dinner - From the menu, Grilled "Hoki" Fish Miso Flavor with Steamed Rice Beef Pastrami Cod Fish "Escabeche" Potato Salad Fresh Salad Onion Dressing Panna Cotta Roll and Butter
Drink: I had JAL's skytime
Comments: There was only one older stewardess serving my row so by the time the meal had reached me, everyone else on the opposite rows had finished their meal and I was famished. The task of giving meals proved more tedious for one sole trollie dollie to handle herself and after the stewardesses on the opposite rows and finished their task, they came along to help this poor old maid. However, the meal was still warm and delicious and I enjoyed it alot, minus the bread which the absent-minded stewardess forgot to give. Service was quite good, with the FAs constantly walking up and down the aisle making sure everyone's flight was comfortable. Later, delicious green tea icecream was also served. What can I say, Oishi!

Date added: 2008-05-21
Flight duration: 6h 30m
Flight class: economy
Ticket price: n/a
Aircraft: B767-346/ER JA611J
Meal: Lunch - According to the menu, Beef Bowl Fresh Garden Salad Honeydew Melon Pudding Japanese Cold Noodle "Udon" Roll and Butter
Drink: I had JAL's skytime (a citrus flavoured punch)
Comments: Was quite disappointed they only had one meal for this rather long flight, but overall was quite satisfied that we still had a choice of Beef Bowl or Fried Perch with Sweet & Sour Sauce/Egg Noodle despite sitting all the way at the back of cattle class. But my choice of Beef Bowl definately didn't taste any better than it looks. Rather fatty pieces of beef. A JAL packet of nuts was served with a drink right before meal time. After the meal, the FAs disappeared.

Flight duration: 11h 30m

Meal: Dinner - Millefeuille with Spicy Pork Fillet and Foie Gras with Plum, Mixed Marinated Seafood , TImbale of White Wine * Consomme Soup with Cabbage & Tomato * Choice of Australian Fillet of Beef with Wild Mushroom Sauce or Pan Fried Turbot with Creamy Mild Curry Sauce * Fresh Salad * Bread and/or Steam Rice * Cheese & Fresh Fruits Opera Macarpone & Cherry Mousse * Coffee Tea * Petits Fours
Drink: Mineral Water. But if desired, there is a selection of Champagne Pier Heidsieck, Laboure Rois Chablis 2004 AC, Schloss Vollrads KG. Oestrich-WInkel 2004 Goethe Riesling Spatlese, Lacheteau Vouvray 2004, Chateau Beau-Site 1997
Comments: Nice Amuse Bouche/Amuse Guelle. The Millefeuille described in the menu were missing fom the starter (!) but still, the dish was good. As with most airline steaks, it was not really possible if one required the steak to be "rare" as the airline galley did not really cook the meat on board, but it was still delicious with the Wild Mushroom Sauce. Steamed rice was available on request for all meals, including Western meals. The dessert was good though not exceedingly so. Petit fours of Japanese choclates were surprisingly excellent, comparable to the best of Belgian chocolates. The cabin crew service was very, very good indeed and the cabin attendents really know how to make passengers feel welcome and they seem to take the notion of "service with a smilie" to heart.

Comments: The last of the meals in this long flight via YVR, just an hour or 2 before landing at Narita. This was the worst meal they served, the others were superb but this one was just to fill the stomach. Was a little bit greasy...

Prelanding - Arr LHR 3pm. Hot - Penne Pasta Bolagnaise, with cheese and veg; sundried tomatoe and salami salad, eggroll and japenese items; fruit salad; bread roll.
Drink: tea, water, green tea, white wine, red wine, juices, Jal's skytime
Comments: Snack: This flight does a triangle - Tokyo-Syd-Brisbane-Tokyo. The Sydney-Brisbane leg got a meal for a 1 hour flight and we got a snack shortly after take off. They were ok, but it would of been good if they make it clear before hand. I had eaten at the airport, but didn't over do it as I was expecting something more. Breakfast: By this time I was relatively hungry. (There were snacks onboard) The bacon was ok but the eggs were a bit rubbery and in one lump as if they'd been baked rather than scambled and then cooked. The baked beens were a little tasteless but the grilled tomatoe helped ad flavour. The potatoe salad was an odd addition, but perhaps this is for the japanese passengers. Lunch: The stew was tasty, but a bit too fatty for my liking. The chichen nugget strip was bizzare. It was processed chicken, not a strip of fresh meat. The dessert was reftershing. Prelanding meal: Probably my favourite meal on this trip. The pasta was just right and tasty. Really hit the spot and I could of had another one. The eggroll was a bit too much carbs, but I liked it with the japenese touch. It must be hard to cater to both asian and western tastes. The salad was ok, not as good as the salad I had on the outbound leg with onion dressing that was really good. The fruits were fresh and plump. Over all I liked the meals and was glad of my choices. I like JALs trays that have the heated bit in there so the food stays warm for longer. Staff were good and very prompt with regular drink runs and more was available in the galley if you wanted. Snackes included pretzels and and nutz and japenese crackers. The "house" wines weren't particualarly nice. Tried the red and white and left most of each bottle.
